🧪 Researchers from Kazan Federal University and Mari State University have jointly studied the alisporivir molecule. This is a promising medicine compound that is active against the hepatitis C virus and also protects cell mitochondria — which is why it is being considered for the treatment of neuromuscular diseases and diabetes.
It turned out that the molecule behaves differently in various environments. In one solvent, it adopts one form; in another, it splits into two equilibrium forms, and only one of them interacts with metal ions. This is important because the molecule’s ability to switch between forms is directly linked to its effect on cells.
🧫 The study involved Dr. Mikhail Dubinin, Doctor of Biological Sciences from the Institute of Natural Sciences and Pharmacy. Mikhail Vasilyevich’s contribution consisted in the biological interpretation of structural data and in analysing the link between the conformational flexibility of alisporivir and its effects on mitochondria. This had previously been confirmed in our researcher’s work using models of muscular dystrophy and diabetes.
